Round 1:

I mulligan to 5 on the play.  Eventually I draw my planeswalker.  I then borrow his eldrazi with traitorous instinct and turn it into a dragon I can trust.

In game 2 I mull to 5 on the draw.  This time its a little different than the game before in that I have two traitorous instincts and Sarhkan.  Also he fails to play a large eldrazi this game.  I might be the best.

The vampire is prob better.  However for some reason I’ve been taking red or black guys early alot lately and ending up with no removal.  So I decided this guy would be fun to try.  The vampire made it to Doug Procunier 3rd pick.

Ugh.  Nothing here excites me.

Chat with Doug on facebook about what colors he was.  He had a Hasty dragon and the vampire, so I decided I would steer clear. Right now I’m just taking the best card available.

The bonus of being the only person playing blue is you have like 30 playables.  I decided to go heavy on the blue cards and just play a few choice white cards.

Round 1:

Bashed with Fliers.

Round 2:

Bashed with Fliers.

Round 3:

Bashed with Fliers.

I know really great match descriptions.  I think it was the most descriptive I could be.

Did pull of Chet’s recommended trick off “Into the Roiling” my “Journey to Nowhere” with the remove trigger on the stack, for double the fun.

I avenged the idiot that beat Doug in Round one.  The guy must have been really lucky against Doug.  Cuz he basically just laid there and took it against me.  This deck was, as the kids say, the stone blade.

Round 1

I fail to find khalani gem, which makes some draws awkward.  However I have 0/4 wall and Scute Mob both games.  In game 2 Scute Mob achieves 21/21 status.

Round 2

My foe has a very sick mono red deck.  I kill Molten Ravager, Plated Geopeed, and a 4/3 for 2RR with Day of Judgement, and was at 19 due to my sweet lands and an Antelope.  However he had 4 creatures back and puts me down the three before I stabilize with Seastalkers and I start to attack with my Gorger.  He draws a shortcutter to finish me.  Thus enforcing my thoughts on Day of Judgment.  I cast it very profitably and still managed to lose the game.

In game two I finaly draw a khalani gem.  However It is coupled with about 10 other lands.  My opponent attacked me for 7 on turn 3.  Geopede + Adventures Gear + +2/+0 Land.  I was on the backfoot the whole game and ended the game with 6 land in play and 5 land plus gem in play.

Overall I think that that this one of the best possible outcomes for a control deck in the draft format.  It also illustrates the old Dave Price adage:  “There are no wrong threats, only wrong answers.”  I think that is a very telling way to draft this format.

Until next time… Courage.

Pack 1 pick 1:

My Pick:

Deep pack, I’ll take the bomb.

Pack 1 pick 2:

My Pick:

Some would argue for the Craw Wurm, to solidify color.  The Strike or Wind Drake could be acceptable.  I like playing black and when you are green, you can splash this easily.

Pack 1 pick 3:

My Pick:

This essentially means black is open.  Tendrils is the most dominant common in this format.

I might have been able to table this and take the Terramorphic Expanse, however I really don’t think the green will be there next pack.  Also trying to table looming shade is just greedy.

Round 1:

G1:

I play Nightmare.  He deals with it.  I Rise it from the Grave.  He deals with it.  I Gravedigg it.  He cannot deal with it.

G2:  He is getting his beat on, whilst I get my severed legion in there.  I cast a timely Tendrils and then finish him with Sign in Blood.  First time I’ve done that.

Round 2:

G1:

He leads with llanowar elf.  I run out a turn two child of night.  He plays Boarderland Ranger.  I doom blade it and Unholy strength my Child.  I win with over 20 life.

G2:

This game was starting similarly.  However he negated my Unholy Strength and Signed my self in blood.  Tendrils allowed me to race with my dread warlock.  I eventually murdered an air elemental and made it ARISE CHICKEN.  CHICKEN ARISE!

Round 3:

G1:  I doom blade his air elemental and I am well on my way to winning the game with Warlock and a pair of shades.  However he draw Armored Ascention and is able to chump block while Attacking me for 5 twice.  Tendrils was on top at the end of this game.

G2:  I have Black Knight with Gorgon Flail holding of his curve of Armorsmith, Swordsmith, Pikemaster.  I begin whittleing with a Warlock.  Diabolic Tutor for Nightmare.  He has Divine Verdict for the Nightmare.  He searched for a mountain with his expanse.  So it is no surprise when he fireballs my Black Knight.  I terror his Pikemaster when he ships.  I hold back my only creature and go all in on it with Unholy Strength and Gorgons flail equip, emptying my hand.  He ships with the team and Divine Verdicts when I block.  Putting me to four life.  I draw swamp, conceed and then look at the tendrils on top of my deck.

Let it be known that I was not that big of a fan of this guy, however if you can get him early enough he can fit into your deck.  I am also very partial toward monoblack (or black with fireball splash) in this format.  If you can cut black hard enough cards like Tendrils will make it too you very late in pack three.

Sideboard
1 Shatter

1 Pyroclasm (yeah, this wasn’t good enough.  Only brought it in for the finals.)
1 Fog
1 Yawning Fissure
2 Goblin Piker

1 Ignite Disorder
1 Panic Attack
1 Holy Strength
1 Duress
1 Trumpet Blast
1 Mountain
1 Vampire Aristocrat
1 Drudge Skeletons
1 Lava Axe
1 Demon’s Horn
1 Forest

Round 1:

G1:  Black Knight on two.  Draw two on three.  Vampire Nocturnus on 4.  Fly in on 5.  Play Child of Night.  Flip black card and fly in for the win.

G2:  This one was close.  I didn’t get a relevant guy down until turn 5.  He had some tricks and removal, but a timely Tendrils kept me in the game.  Also I kept up by Rising my Gravedigger from the Grave (he brought his friend Looming shade back to the party).  My opponent had a Prized Unicorn and Stampeding Rhino in play.  I take him to 13 with a shade.  Play down Child and Howling Banshee to go with my gravedigger.  He is on 10, I am on 9.  He plays Awakener Druid.  Ships with his squad, putting me to 3, taking out the Child of the Night.  I send a lethal attack forcing Awakener Druid to leave the party.  I sit at 3 with Gravedigger untapped and Swamp in hand, but he draws a blank and scoops.  No X spells for me in round one.

Round 2:

G1: Children and their Daddy + Revealing Tendrils!

G2: My opponent ran out Awakener Druid on three, animating his only forest.  ASSASSINATE!!!  (Daaaad, there’s poop in my FANNY PACK!)  He never played another Forest.  He made me work for it, but I had Black Knight, he had plains.  I had two looming shades, he had none.  This little piggy had roast beef.

Round 3:

G1: He was at 14.  So I fireballed him for 7… TWICE!

G2: Got too greedy with earthquake.  He also played, and regrew, an Ant Queen this game.  I could have drawn the game with Earthquake at one point, but I decided to play for the win and came up short.

G3:  I got to ‘clasm two of his men away on turn 5 and ship with a fully aroused Vampire Nocturnus.  I pressed my advantage with a Child and a pair of Looming Shades.  On of the Shades got pumped to 7/7 when a Oakenformed Giant Spider got in the way and my other Shade perished (he was gravedugg later).  He eventually got to UU and Mind Controlled my Vampire. I got him to 7 with my second Shade before he Mind Controlled it as well.  I knew he had both Essence Scatter and Negate in his deck, but with the Vampire Still playing for my team, by showing me everyone of his draws, I was able to wait for the coast to clear before fireballing him for 7 once more.

What a rediculous deck I had.  I am sure I pissed off some of my opponents.  4x X Spells.  Vampire on turn 4 many games, with Child already to go.  Assassinating Forests that never attacked.  I had it all.  This deck was just stupid good.

ack 1 pick 1:

My Pick:

No bomb rare in this pack, but Mind Control is great.  The only other cards of note are Lightning Bolt and the now Uncommon Red Tim.  The tim is awesome, however both these cards are red.  I think red is the worst color in M10 draft.  The best cards are better with more mountains (Seismic Strike, Fiery Hellhound) however it is very tough to go mono red.  Splashing with these cards severely limits them.

Pack 1 pick 2:

My Pick:

Another Tim.  This pack is not great otherwise, going to try and stick with my Control Magic.
Pack 1 pick 3:

My Pick:

Wow! Now an Artillery!  The flail would be my pick here regardless, but can you imagine having 2 Tims and a gorgan flail 4 picks into the draft.  Build your own assassin indeed

Pack 1 pick 4:

My Pick:

These packs have been good so far.  I like the oakenform on blue guys as a way to put presure on early.

Pack 1 pick 5:

My Pick:

Seems Green is open.

Tempted to cut the windstorm, but two drops are important in the format.

G2:  I Oakenform a Deadly Recludse on 3.  He Ice Cages it.  I rip Gorgon’s Flail.  I would have won the game eventually anyway, but I fireballed him for 5 to finish it.

Round Two:

G1:

Captain of the Night-watch.

G2:

See Game one. =(
